REFURNITURE PROJECTS

Der Grüne Punkt, Cologne-DE
Projects | Curvy chairs and Cobra bar stools made of 100% recycled plastic

Der Grüne Punkt, Cologne-DE

Der Grüne Punkt (DE) is a pioneer in circular activities and the first organisation worldwide to collect waste in addition to the government's waste collection system. For approx. 30 years (since 1991) Der Grüne Punkt has been focusing on return systems and the processing of return streams into raw materials. Der Grüne Punkt is now a leading supplier of recovery systems.

RESULT

Der Grüne Punkt has new chairs with 100% recycled seats and backrests. This minimises the use of primary raw materials.

SAVINGS

What's more, the total saving on CO2 emissions for this project — compared to new chairs with standard plastic seats and backrests — is approximately 1340 Kg CO2.

Until recently, it was impossible to upgrade general plastic household waste to high-quality products such as a chair seat and backrest. With the innovative processing process of Der Grüne Punkt, this is now possible. And these products are, of course, also 100% recyclable.

Casala is a client of Der Grüne Punkt for recycled plastic parts. They asked us if we were able to supply chairs with a seat and backrest based on their new high-quality recycled plastic granulate. We were happy to take on this challenge. After the necessary quality and processing tests in our production process, 335 seats and backs were produced. These new plastic parts can be used in Curvy chairs, Cobra chairs and Cobra barstools.

In 2017, the Grote Kerk in Naarden (NL) replaced its Casala Curvy chairs after 15 years of use. The upholstered seats were worn out after prolonged and frequent use. What’s more, the plastic backrests also showed signs of use due to frequent stacking and dismounting. Sustainability is of paramount importance to the Great Church. After careful assessment based on seating comfort, appearance, ease of handling and durability, Casala's Curvy chairs were chosen once again.

The 850 new Curvy chairs, this time equipped with PEFC® certified wooden backrest, were delivered under the Circular Warranty. The old chairs were taken back at a guaranteed cash value.

After refurbishment, they were delivered to new projects, including ‘De Goede Doelen Loterijen’ in Amsterdam.

RESULT

as a consequence of refurbishment, literally "as good as new" chairs with a 5-year guarantee have been delivered to ‘De Goede Doelen Loterijen’.

SAVINGS

The total saving on CO2 emissions compared to newly produced chairs was approx. 1,438 Kg CO2.

At the end of 2018, ‘De Goede Doelen Loterijen’ moved into a completely renovated building on the Amsterdam Zuidas. All ecological, environmental and energy measures that were taken have resulted in a BREEAM Outstanding certification for the sustainable design, construction process and operation of the building.

Casala delivered 141 refurbished Curvy chairs for the auditorium. The "chairs with experience" were taken back from the Great Church in Naarden after 15 years. The existing chairs with plastic backs were completely disassembled. The construction was checked and improved where necessary, the seat and backrest were upholstered with a fabric from recycled thread and then re-assembled. The chrome base was cleaned and fitted with new glides. The old floor glides that could no longer be used were recycled. The entire process was carried out with a minimum use of new raw materials, but a maximum use of recycled materials.

City Hall Hengelo, Hengelo-NL

The Municipality of Hengelo wanted to use as much circular furniture as possible in its buildings. Approximately 700 multifunctional chairs were needed. For the most part, Casala used the 15-year-old Curvy chairs, originating from the Grote Kerk Naarden (NL). Through ReFurniture, these chairs were refurbished at our production location and delivered to the municipality of Hengelo according to the client's wishes.

Almost all components of the old chairs have been reused. The chairs had a plastic back, upholstered seat and chromed base. We reused them by upholstering with a 100% recycled fabric. The original frame was reinforced according to the latest standards and, because the quality of the chrome, after 15 years of intensive use, was still in good condition, was reused without any further coating. The floor glides were replaced with new ones. The old floor glides that could no longer be used were recycled.

RESULT

With refurbishment using a minimum of new raw materials, but a maximum of recycled parts and materials, approximately 700 good quality chairs with a 5 year guarantee were delivered to the municipality of Hengelo.

RESULT

Through refurbishment, 120 good quality chairs with a 5 year guarantee could be delivered to the Association of Insurers.

SAVINGS

The total saving on CO2 emissions compared to newly produced chairs: approx. 1,248 Kg CO2.

Verbond van Verzekeraars, Den Haag-NL

The Association of Insurers required 120 comfortable conference chairs. They wanted chairs with a circular nature or with minimal impact on the world. In the meantime, 400 Feniks chairs had been taken back by Casala from the ‘Diakonissenkrankenhaus’ in Mannheim (DE). The 4-legged chair looked over-polished with a worn-out wooden seat and back due to the use of aggressive detergent.

The chairs were completely disassembled, with the existing backrests and seats covered with a layer of foam and covered with a 100% recycled fabric. The frames were cleaned, and epoxy coated. The entire unit was re-assembled and fitted with new floor glides. The stacking bumper under the seat was reused. The old floor glides that could no longer be used were recycled. The use of new raw materials was minimised throughout the process and a maximum amount of recycled materials was used in production.

Projects | refurbished contract furniture at Johan Cruijff Arena, Amsterdam (NL).

Johan Cruijff ArenA, Amsterdam-NL

The Johan Cruijff ArenA contains 350 chairs from another furniture manufacturer in the conference centre. The chairs were severely damaged by use, stacking without stacking bumper and transport. The floor glides were missing, and the seat tubs had come loose from the frame. These chairs were basically no longer usable.

The chairs with plastic shells were completely disassembled, the construction checked and improved, upholstered with a fabric of recycled thread and reassembled. The base was cleaned and fitted with new glides.

RESULT

Through refurbishment, with a minimum use of new raw materials, the existing chairs were given an extended useful life by the same owner. The chairs were saved from the waste phase and production of new chairs was prevented.

SAVINGS

The total saving on CO2 emissions compared to newly produced chairs: approx. 2,870 Kg CO2.
